MEMBERSHIP
HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE LUTHERAN CHURCH.
Infant Baptism
Christian parents (often assisted by Christian sponsors or godparents)
present their newborn children for Baptism. They promise to teach
the Good News to their children as they grow.
In their early teens, these children are given a period of instruction
in the basic truths of the Christian faith, and they are then accepted
as adult members in the rite of Confirmation.
Confirmation leads to participation in the Lord’s Supper.
Adult Baptism
Persons of responsible age who have never been baptized are received
into full membership by Baptism. This follows a period of instruction
in the Christian faith, and a personal confession of faith in Jesus
Christ.
Affirmation of faith
Adults previously baptized in an orthodox Christian church are
received into full membership following a period of instruction,
and personal confession of faith in Jesus Christ. This is sometimes
called ‘adult confirmation’. Lutherans whose membership
in the church has lapsed are warmly welcomed back and re-admitted
to the full membership and ministry of the church on personal re-affirmation
of their faith in Jesus Christ and of their earnest desire to be
part of his church.
